Seizure and more Breathing Problems
Symptoms

Symptoms of brachycephalic airway syndrome often include the following:

  • Constant open mouth breathing
  • Noisy breathing
  • Excessive snoring
  • Choking and gagging
  • Blue appearance of the gums
  • Fainting

Symptoms are often worse during hot and humid weather and or can be brought on by allergies. Obesity can also worsen the clinical signs along with over exercise or excitement.

A diagnosis is made by visual examination of the nostrils, soft palate and larynx. Laryngeal examinations may need to be performed with the aid of sedation or under anesthesia. A complete physical examination should also be done, including auscultation of the chest with a stethoscope, to help exclude other causes of respiratory difficulty. Your vet may want to also take thoracic x-rays to rule out if heart or lung disease is present.
